Tech deals for Cyber Monday: Laptops, tablets, game consoles and TVs

Tech gadgets are always a popular gift during the holiday season, and the lure of Cyber Monday is very appealing for high-tech bargain hunters.

One thing to remember: Cyber Monday  isn't the best time to get all tech products, especially if you want the latest thing. When it comes to tech, retailers use this time of year to clear out old stock -- particularly for TVs and laptops, which traditionally get a late winter or early spring refresh. That said, there are good discounts for people who are happy to save the money on gadgets, even if they aren't the latest and greatest. Here's a roundup of some of the best tech deals out there worth pursuing:

There are lots of discounts for tablets and laptops today, particularly for older models. Microsoft, for example, is still offering up to $150 off of its Surface Pro 3. It's also offering discounts on several other laptops, notably $100 off the Asus Transformer (normally $750) and $200 off the pricey Toshiba Satellite Signature Edition laptop -- now $1,200 instead of its normal $1,500. There are also some good desktop deals to be had from Microsoft, such as $300 off the Dell XPS Signature Edition All-in-One, normally $2,000.
Best Buy is still offering some deals on laptops as well, notably a $70 discount on last year's $370 Lenovo Yoga 2, and $50 off the similarly flexible Toshiba-Satellite Radius.  Staples has also announced a handful of online-only deals including one for a $149 Asus X205 laptop, plus up to $250 off "select desktops and laptops" online.

Apple is one company that's never quite gotten into the discounting spirit, but the company is donating all of the proceeds from sales today to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS. It will be running the donation promotion through Dec. 7.  If you want some deals on Apple products, the pickings are a bit slim. Best Buy is offering a $30 discount on select models of the iPad Air, and $50 off the iPad mini. Wal-Mart is also offering $50 -- well, technically $49 -- off the price of the iPad mini.

Best Buy also has a few good deals on smartphones front, giving a $50 credit to anyone buying a cellphone on the Sprint network. T-Mobile, meanwhile, is offering its own deals: an 64GB iPhone 6 for $100 off, plus discounts on the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s. The carrier is also offering $0 down on a handful of top phones, including the Samsung Galaxy S5, Note 3, Note 4 and Avant as well as the Google Nexus 6 and the LG Optimus L90. Motorola is also letting users sign up for $140 of a Moto X off-contract; that deal gives you 30 percent of accessories as well.
If you're looking to bump up the quality of your living room setup, some of Amazon's biggest deals come in the area of entertainment equipment. The main deal being advertised is for its own Fire TV box, which gets a $30 price cut to $69. The retailer (whose chief executive, Jeffrey Bezos, is the owner of The Washington Post) is also offering a deep discount on a super-expensive television: $1500 off the $4,000 Samsung curved 55-inch 4K Ultra Television.

Wal-Mart is also offering a discount on a less expensive Samsung 55-inch television -- $900 off a 1080p model, for a sale price of $997.  Best Buy, meanwhile is offering $130 off the slightly smaller Sharp 42-inch LCD HDTV for a final price of $349.

Gamers also have quite a few options on Cyber Monday, particularly when looking at the latest consoles. GameStop is offering discounts for both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Players can pick up the Xbox  One "Assassin's Creed: Unity" bundle, which includes that game, a console at a $20 discount; $430 with the Kinect controller, and $330 without it. Best Buy also has a $330 Xbox One bundle with "Assassin's Creed" on offer.

If Sony is more your gaming speed, the game retailer is also offering a $400 off a PlayStation 4 bundle, with copies of "Grand Theft Auto V" and "The Last of Us Remastered." Wal-Mart has a more kid-focused PlayStation 4 bundle with a $39 discount on a package that includes the console, plus copies of "Lego Batman" and "LittleBigPlanet 3."
