YouTube has released its annual list of the year's top ten videos, giving us a little glimpse into how we were spending (or wasting?) our time this year. Video -- particularly from mobile devices -- is becoming an increasingly powerful medium and clips played key parts in the country's conversations about race, police brutality and gender this year.
But, generally speaking, the YouTube list shows that the happiest, feel-good stuff rises to the top. Pranks, comedy videos and feel-good clips dominate the list in 2014 -- -- almost as if we needed to keep it light.
One note: the YouTube list can be a little misleading. No individual cover of Frozen's "Let it Go," or any other particular meme made the top ten -- but that doesn't mean that they weren't huge trends on the site this year. Still, it's fun to look at the stand-outs.
10. 10 Hours of Walking in NYC as a Woman by Street Harassment Video
It was a year with plenty of controversy, but the only video on YouTube's list that's really about a serious issue is this one: a short film showing what it's like to walk around New York City while female. The video, which made headlines in November, plugged into an ongoing conversation this year about everyday sexism, feminism and the very definition of a feminist. 9. Goku vs Superman. Epic Rap Battles of History Season 3. by ERB
"Epic Rap Battles of History" has made its name by pairing unlikely adversaries -- Justin Bieber vs. Beethoven, The Mythbusters vs. The Ghostbusters -- against each other for fiery battles to the beat. As part of a promotion for the horror film "Devil's Due," a special effects team set up a remote-controlled stroller with a demonic baby inside to pop out at unsuspecting passersby. The result is pretty hilarious.
